Canada out of Afghanistan in 2009?

It is looking more and more likely that Canada's Conservative government will have little choice but to end the Canadian involvement in NATO's Afghan mission early in 2009: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/07/04/layton-afghan-070704.html. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is already on the record as saying that he will not agree to an extension of Canada's mission without a consensus in Parliament, which is looking more or less impossible right now.

I can't say that I am surprised by this. Canadian public support for the mission was always tepid at best, and once Canadian soldiers started getting killed, it went down even more. The fact of the matter is that Canadians by and large do not see the War against Islamofascism as involving them. They view it as an American fight, and if Canada pulls out of Afghanistan, it will be just fine.............

Update, 6:15 p.m.): At least one of Canada's major newspapers disagrees with any decision to pull out of the mission: http://www.thestar.com/comment/article/232528.
