I honestly can't believe that piracy lives on in today's world, but it is a problem not only here but in the waters off the Indonesian archipelago. However, in the waters off Somalia it is taking on a far more dangerous dimension, as we see the beginnings of a union (perhaps of convenience) between the pirates and Islamofascists.

As the article reports, the pirates are now going hutning for Americans and Israelis. Isn't that reassuring?

Moonbat electioneering, Canadian-style

A Liberal Candidate runing for Parliament in a Winnipeg riding is catching justified flack after a column she wrote as a freelance journalist came to light. In the column, she claimed that the Mossad and CIA knew in advance about the 9/11 terrorist atacks, and that Jewish-owned businesses had gotten out of the Twin Towers before they were attacked: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canadavotes/story/2008/09/25/hughes-liberal.html.

I don't know what motivates these conspiracy theorist wackos, but there are far too many of them and they are far too prominent.

And they talk about AMERICAN arrogance?

Growing up in Canada, one of the constant themes that was beaten into my head was that "Americans are arrogant". There was a perception on the part of just about everyone in my homeland that all Americans had a superiority complex. A funny thing happened after I relocated south of the 49th parallel: I realized that the exact opposite was true. If you want a Canadian to show his or her true stripes, get them to talk about Canada vs. the United States. What you will get (in many--NOT ALL--cases) is a stream of generalizations about how much better Canada is than the U.S., about how stupid and ill-informed Americans are, about how wasteful they are, etc., etc., etc. Here's a case in point, the column on September 5 (sorry that I'm late to this party) from one Heather Mallick on the CBC (note, the CBC is the official, government-funded radio and television outlet) heaping abuse on Americans in general and Republicans in particular: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/09/05/f-vp-mallick.html. Here are some of her pearls of wisdom:

1) "She [Sarah Palin] added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote........"

3) "Palin was not a sure choice, not even for the stolidly Republican ladies branch of Citizens for a Tackier America. No, she isn't even female really. She's a type, and she comes in male form too."
4) "John Doyle, the cleverest critic in Canada, comes right out and calls Palin an Alaska hillbilly. Damn his eyes, I wish I'd had the wit to come up with it first. It's safer than "white trash" but I'll pluck safety out of the nettle danger. Or something."
5) "White trash — not trailer trash, that's something different — is rural, loud, proudly unlettered (like Bush himself), suspicious of the urban, frankly disbelieving of the foreign, and a fan of the American cliché of authenticity."
6) "Palin has a toned-down version of the porn actress look favoured by this decade's woman, the overtreated hair, puffy lips and permanently alarmed expression. Bristol has what is known in Britain as the look of the teen mum, the "pramface." Husband Todd looks like a roughneck; Track, heading off to Iraq, appears terrified. They claim to be family obsessed while being studiously terrible at parenting. What normal father would want Levi "I'm a fuckin' redneck" Johnson prodding his daughter?"
7) "The conventioneers are nothing like the rich men who run the party, and that's the mystery of the hick vote. They'd be much better served by the Democrats. I know Thomas Frank answered this in What's the Matter with Kansas?; I know that red states vote Republican on social issues to give themselves the only self-esteem available to their broken, economically abused existence."

It goes on and on. Read it only if you have the stomach. After reading this puerile drivel, I don't want to hear from any Canadian about how "condescending and arrogant" Americans are, because I don't know of any creature on the planet who fits that definition more than a Canadian elite.

What a cheery thought THIS is

Let's ponder the implications of this for a minute: We have what amounts to an open border to the south. How difficult does anyone think that it would be for Spanish-speaking terrorists to come across through Mexico? That doesn't scare you enough? Well, how about this: Venezuela is flush with oil cash (made largely at our expense). It is a known supporter and funding source for terrorist organizations (just ask the Colombians). Given that the average Venezuelan really hasn't seen much of an improvement in his or her life, where do you think all that oil money is going?

Read between the lines on this one. The next major terrorist attack on this country is as likely as not to be planned and launched from South America as it is from the Middle East.

Move over, Chris Satullo, you're not alone on the self-hating express train

A price to be paid

The bizarro world that is Berkeley, California, may finally start to pay a price for its relentlessly left-wing, anti-American activity. There was one very telling comment at the end of the article which I found to be a very telling indicator of the mindset of those running the city:

I don't see how the businesses in that square can sustain the kind of controversy that the Marine recruiting center has had on that locale."

So, this idiot politician is blaming the Marines for the problem. No, it has NOTHING to do with the license to intimidate and harass that the city council has given to Code Pink and its seditious allies.

Finally, the right decision

The United States and Israel have apparently decided at long last to boycott the U.N.'s 2009 "anti-racism conference", known more commonly as Durban II: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/971779.html. Canada had announced long ago that it would not attend, as this conference has all the hallmarks of being an even bigger anti-Israel, anti-American hatefest than was the 2001 conference. It should never have taken the Americans or Israelis this long to make a decision that required no thought at all. Then again, with the current leadership in Israel and Condi "The Queen of Appeasement" Rice running the show here, maybe I should be more surprised that the right decision was made at all. Of course, there is still plenty of time for Israel and the United States to get it wrong, and you can be sure that none of the European countries will follow suit.

Swiss miss

Fair questions

The questions asked are pertinent and important. I don't think that anyone cares if, for example, Brazil or Japan donate money to a particular school, because there is no likelihood that those countries are trying to alter or influence Americans by doing so. When the money comes from Saudi Arabia, or rich Saudis who have a history of trying to do just that (influence U.S. policy), the examination needs to be different. Sorry, but that's reality.

An Angry Leftie in a rare moment of candor

I've blogged previously about how dishonest the "I support the troops but I'm against the war" motto of the left is. Canada is apparently set to pull out of the 2009 U.N. anti-racism conference, which is already being called "Durban II", after the 2001 anti-racism conference. The logic of the Canadian government is unassailable: This conference is already looking like it will be a repeat, or even more venomous version, of the anti-Semitic, anti-American hatefest which took place in 2001.

If only other world governments had the same courage of conviction that the Harper government apparently does..............

Treason

I wonder if this word still has meaning. An individual such as Adam Gadahn regularly issues statements calling for the death of Americans and terrorist attacks against the United States, yet I have zero doubt that in the event that Gadahn is ever captured by U.S. forces or somehow is taken into custtody, there would be no shortage of groups such as the ACLU which would fall all over themselves to represent him and screech that he should be given a "fair trial", and that, in short, there is no such thing as treason. No, they would say, he was just exercising his right to free speech.

I don't know what it was about this Op-Ed, but it was almost too much to stomach. Maybe it was his palpable disdain for the use of military force for any reason. Maybe it was the underlying current of rabid anti-Israeli sentiment (read Hedges' other stuff. It's a common theme in his writings). Maybe it was the worship of the NIE, which is so typical of those who want to politicize everything (even though this very report may have been political in terms of its findings). Regardless, it was still disheartening to read it..............
