Some nutcase religious leader in Pakistan has issued a "fatwa" against Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari because Zardari apparently had the temerity to comment on Sarah Palin's actrativeness: http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/02/pakistani-religious-leader-issues-fatwa-president-complimenting-palin/. Apparently, this was "immoral and shameful".
Now, this particular "fatwa" didn't carry with it a death sentence, but how far down the road do you think that is?

Sympathy for the devil
I'm always bemused when people cry out for "humane" treatment of terrorists, such as Aafia Siddiqui, the neuroscientist who wanted to attack such targets as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, etc.: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/nyregion/03indict.html?_r=1&oref=slogin. Siddiqui shot at Pakistani troops who were trying to arrest her, and she was shot as part of the arrest, leading to this gem from her attorney: “She needs further tests....She needs treatment. She needs care. She needs human rights. She needs to be treated in a humane fashion based on what everybody concedes happened to her. And they’re not doing it.”
She needs "human rights"? She needs to be "treated in a humane fashion"???? I'll bet that her intended victims weren't going to be treated in anything remotely resembling a "humane fashion". I have zero sympathy for her. None.

Be nervous
I've blogged previously about Pakistan, and what would happen if Pervez Musharraf were gone. Well, we're going to find out very soon: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,405221,00.html. We know that Musharraf was an ally in name only in the war against Islamic terrorism. That said, whoever replaces him will likely be far worse. Anybody who thinks that a nuclear armed Taliban-style state is a good thing is probably cheering right now.

No easy solutions
Pakistan's government is corrupt and has links to worldwide terrorism. Of that there can be no doubt: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/30/world/asia/30pstan.html?_r=1&oref=slogin. However, what would replace it if it fell? Does anyone want to contemplate the idea of a Taliban-style government with nuclear weapons? How long does anyone think it would take before one of those nukes came into the possession of al Qaeda, or Hamas, or Hezbollah, or any of the other terrorist organizations out there?
We may not like the Pakistani government, but we should be VERY leery of what might take its place...........

Pakistan surrenders
This is a really bad development which seems as though it is being ignored by the MSM. Pakistan's new government has reached an "accord" with the terrorist elements in those infamous "border territories" which will see it pull the army out in exchange for an agreement by the terrorists to stop homicide bombings: http://washingtontimes.com/article/20080522/FOREIGN/510395498/1003/foreign.
In essence, what this means is that al Qaeda and its sympathizers now control a large swath of Pakistan adjacent to the Afghan border. If someone can tell me how this is in any way a good or even a neutral development, I'm willing to listen.

I guess that this would solve the problem
A Pakistani newspaper editor has advocated that Pakistan use nuclear weapons to "free" Kashmir from Indian control: http://www.thememriblog.org/blog_personal/en/6072.htm. That this would cause a nuclear conflagration which would result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people on both sides of the border, if not millions, seems to concern him not in the least.

Winds of change in Pakistan
Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani President, received a stunning and unequivocal rebuke from Pakistani voters the other day, when his governing party was virtually obliterated in the election which was held: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120347037589978727.html. More significantly, the Islamists, who Mr. Musharraf had used as a political tool to maintain Western support in general and American support in particular, were equally thrashed.
Who will take power now in the world's only Muslim nuclear power (until Iran achieves its goal, that is)? Probably a coalition of parties that are thankfully also pro-Western. It could be that Pakistan is pulling itself back from the brink of civil war, as was the situation in late December, after Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. We can only hope that that is indeed the case...........

Pakistan continues to disintegrate
There have long been rumours that Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri are now in Pakistan's tribal regions, along with Mullah Omar and the former Taliban leadership. What most people don't know is that the Waziristan area, which the Pakistani government abandoned to the Islamofascists in 2006, has long been a source of concern for others: http://www.opinionjournal.com/federation/feature/?id=110011067.
The question is, what (if anything) can we do about what is going on there? Pakistan is a sovereign country, one with nuclear weapons. The only thing that seems fairly certain is that the status quo is unacceptable.

An unfathomable possibility
Imagine the Taliban (and its al Qaeda brothers) with nuclear weapons. That is the goal of the Jihadist movement, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto was but one step along the road towards that goal: http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110011053.
The Wall Street Journal has it exactly right. Blame has been leveled at Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for Bhutto's assassination, and Bhutto herself had written an e-mail just days before her death in which she apparently said that Musharraf should receive the blame in the event that she was killed. Logically, though, and ironically, Musharraf is the one with the most to lose by what happened yesterday, and like him or not, trust him or not, he is no dummy. He realized that. As facts continue to come out, I may be proven wrong, but I would be very, very surprised if he was behind the assassination.
On the other hand, the instability created by Bhutto's death benefits the Islamofascists (and their many supporters in the Pakistani military apparatus). The more unstable the Pakistani government becomes, the more likely it is that an Islamist could end up in charge of the country and its nuclear weapons. That would and should concern everyone in the West, and equally importantly, it would cause a lot of concern in the country directly to the east of Pakistan, India. You can be sure that New Delhi is watching the goings on in Pakistan with great concern, and don't be surprised to see an increase in the military preparedness of the Indian Army. As well, I wouldn't be shocked if there were some kind of plan put into place to seize the Pakistani nukes in the event of an Islamofascist takeover of the country.

Benazir Bhutto Assassinated
Breaking news from this morning: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071227/ap_on_re_as/pakistan. At this point, we don't know much about the attack, other than the fact that approximately 20 others were killed. We don't know who did this at this point, but suspicion is rightfully centering around either current Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf or al Qaeda-aligned terrorists.
Either way, the law of unintended consequences may apply here. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in 1914, no one expected that it would trigger WWI and lead to a redrawing of the world map. We had best watch with great concern what goes on in Pakistan now, a country with nuclear weapons. If Pakistan falls the wrong way, the world will be come a much more dangerous place than it already is.

The latest from the Religion of Peace
Stories like this make me feel all warm and fuzzy: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22793111-25837,00.html. Scroll past the first part of the story and go down to where it describes how the Islamofascist who tried to kill Benazir Bhutto used a one year-old child with a bomb strapped to it to commit the terrorist act. I wonder, did the demented psychotics who thought this up expect that a one-year old was going to get his 72 virgins in paradise?
I'm going to slug the next person who refers to these subhumans as "militants", or "activists", or "fundamentalists". Someone who plans and does something like this is none of these things. They are human vermin, and are worthy only of extermination...............

The Religion of Peace and Tolerance strikes again
Apparently, destroying world heritage landmarks such as the Bamiyyan Buddha Statues in 2001 wasn't enough for the Religion of Peace and Tolerance. As such, its adherents have now gone after another Buddha statue, this time in Pakistan: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/10/11/wpak111.xml. I had to go to an English paper to get a report on this because, God forbid, any representatives of our MSM paint the Islamic faith in anything other than a glowing light.
This P.C. bulls--t is going to get us all killed. You can NOT fight an enemy as ruthless as this one in a politically correct fashion. Life means nothing to them. History means nothing to them. Culture means nothing to them. Science means nothing to them, except where they can use it to engage in terrorist attacks.
After 9/11, I had a debate with a good friend of mine, and he was certain that 9/11 was the wakeup call we needed. I was much more pessimistic, and argued that not only would we learn nothing from what happened that awful day, we would move in the other direction. Time has proven me right. If anything, Islam now enjoys a status in the West in general and the United States in particular that Bin Laden and his ilk could not have possibly imagined in their wildest dreams before 9/11. The rare voices that criticize the faith, such as Stephen Emerson, Dr. Andrew Bostom and Daniel Pipes, are immediately shouted down as being racist and "Islamophobic".
This is not a clash OF civilizations. It is a battle of civilization against primitive, seventh century religious zealots armed with 21st century technology, people who believe that they are mandated by God to establish a global caliphate run by Sharia law. It makes no difference if the are Shiite freaks like Hezbollah or the Iranian Mullahs, or Sunni whack jobs like al Qaeda or its progeny. And, if you think that they would be "satisfied" if Israel were wiped out, or if the U.S. immediately pulled all troops out of the Middle East (HELLOOOOOO, Congressman Ron Paul!), you're deluding yourself. This ideology is a Fascist ideology, and it will never be satisfied, because Fascism is inherently expansionist. It cannot be dealt with via a policy of containment. "Grievances" such as the existence of Israel and the presence of U.S. forces in the Middle East would quickly be replaced by new ones (Al Andalus, anyone?). There are only two possible outcomes here, win or lose. There cannot be a tie.
The question in my mind is, do we have what it takes to fight this war? I question that we do, given that we are now so P.C. that we dare not even acknowledge who our enemy is. "War on Terror"? Give me a break. This is a war against ISLAMIC FASCISM. The last I checked, neither Basque separatists nor disgruntled I.R.A. holdouts were flying planes into buildings in New York or murdering school children in Beslan.
I am sorry that I have strayed so far from my original point, but this story really ticked me off. When the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyyan Buddhas, I said that it was a harbinger of things to come. A matter of weeks later, I was proven right. At some point, civilized people must stop living in their morally relativistic cocoon and confront these savages. When will it happen?

Whither Pakistan?
What has been going on there should concern us all: http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=20070723&s=bergen072307. If that country falls into the hands of the Taliban elements in Pakistan, as could very well occur, we would be facing a country with a seventh century mentality and nuclear weapons. You can be sure that if this occurs, the new government will be only too happy to disseminate its nuclear technology to its terrorist buddies.

The Summer of Love, this ain't
You want to know what's coming this summer, or if not this summer then soon after? Here is what's in the cards in the Middle East: http://www.upi.com/International_Intelligence/Analysis/2007/07/09/commentary_israel_and_hezbollah_round_2/7836/. Israel is in an existential war. Right now that war is in a cold phase, but that cannot last forever.
So, the questions I have are:
1) Will Israel finish the job this time?
2) Will the world stop Israel from doing what it must?
3) Will Iran officially get involved, especially if their Hezbollah and Syrian proxies appear headed for defeat?
4) Will the U.S. intervene if Israel appears to be headed for defeat?
5) Will Israel use nuclear weapons if it appears that it is being defeated?
6) Will the Olmert government survive the war?
6) Will the Saudis and Egyptians get involved?
7) Will Hamas open a second (third?) front from Gaza?
8) Will the "Boycott Israel" movement gain or lose energy once the fighting begins?
9) What will Russia and China do?
10) Will al Qaeda or its affiliates take advantage of the situation to launch terrorist attacks in the West, and what form would those attacks take?
11) Will Pakistan get involved in any Middle East conflict?
I don't have the answers to these questions. If any of my readers do, I would welcome them...............

The nuclear power we need to fear RIGHT NOW
We can talk about Iran all we want--and talking about Iran is all that anyone seems willing to do--but we ignore what is going on in Pakistan at our own peril: http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=w070702&s=schmidle070307. For more on the same subject, go here: http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=28946.
Lest we forget, Pakistan is already a nuclear power.
Lest we forget, it was a Pakistani nuclear scientist who reportedly passed on nuclear technology to Iran and terrrorists.
Lest we forget, Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri are reportedly hiding in Pakistan.
Lest we forget, Pakistan is currently led by Pervez Musharraf, a much-despised military man who supported the Taliban prior to 9/11.
Lest we forget, he is supposed to be a moderate.
Think that it's bad now? Imagine a nuclear armed, Taliban-style government in Pakistan, which is very much a possibility. Sleep well tonight my friends..............
