Not enough people "get it"

Michael Ledeen has a thorough and well-reasoned piece in today's Wall Street Journal on how we as people rarely take seriously those who threaten us, and why we are so foolish not to do so: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121279291616353311.html?mod=djemEditorialPage.

The point he raises is an excellent one. History is full of examples of one nation or group threatening another (or others) with death, extinction, etc., and yet time and again, those warnings are ignored. Of course, the best example of this is the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and its threats to wipe out the Jews. Once it obtained power, it set about accomplishing that objective.

So, why are we ignoring the Iranians when they are promising the exact same thing? Iran is not a country with a long history of anti-Semitism, or even anti-Israeli sentiment. That began 29 years ago, when the Khomeini-ist revolution swept the country. The steady stream of anti-Israeli propaganda and pronouncements by the Iranian President is therefore NOT something "for domestic consumption". It's something much more ominous than that, and the sooner we realize that, the better.

I'm not sure who's more delusional, the far left of the Democratic Party or the the 1930's isolationist wing of the Republican Party, as represented by people such as Pitchfork Pat Buchanan. Buchanan, who's never met a Nazi he didn't want to defend, now blames the German invasion of Poland in 1939...........on Poland: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26606. You see, those unreasonable Poles refused to give up Danzig. Imagine that. I am sure that Hitler would have been completely satisfied if Poland had turned Danzig (now known as Gdansk) over to Germany. Yup, it would have been PEACE IN OUR TIME.

It's about time

Israel is finally responding to the pernicious and incessant bias against it by the United Nations Human Rights Commission and its new investigator Richard Falk, by barring him from the country: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/04/08/africa/ME-GEN-Israel-UN-Barred.php. Falk has compared Israel to Nazi Germany, and he has stood by those comments in recent interviews. Israel for some reason is concerned about his ability to be impartial. Really? I can't imagine that a U.N. hack would ever be anything less than completely impartial when it comes to Israel.......................

Ignorance continues to be bliss

Last week, the world quietly "celebrated" an inauspicious anniversary, the 75th anniversary of the ascension to the German Chancellor's title of one Adolph Hitler: http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/014/705evxkd.asp. In hindsight, we always seem to wonder why the people living in the 1930s didn't see what was coming. Hitler was quite open about what he wanted to do, not only to the Jews but to the world in general. Yet, he was not taken seriously, or his words were brushed aside as being mere rhetoric..................until he started acting on them.

So it was with Germany, so it is with Iran. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is more than willing to say what he wants to do to Jews in general and Israel in particular. Yet, his comments are either rationalized away, ignored, or minimized. No one seems to care. Well, I do. You see, the last person who said that he wanted to kill all the Jews and who had any power actually went out and tried to do it. The old cliche is that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Is that going to be the case here?

If you look at the photo, this thing is cut fairly precisely. I have to wonder who would do something like this, and why. What motivates a person to cut an unquestioned symbol of hate (at least since WWII) into a field? I just don't get it.

The whole situation seems impossible and bizarre, but there it is, in black and white. I wonder if it wouldn't be better if, rather than punishing them criminally, they were just expelled from Israel and stripped of its citizenship.
