Philly Phutility

The Philadelphia Phillies, who are in the midst of a Stage Four meltdown against the New York Mets this weekend, are now just five measly losses shy of the magical 10,000 mark: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_stories/20070701_Phabulous_Phutility__10_000_Losses.html. A little perspective here: The Phillies, a/k/a the Sillies, a/k/a the Foldies, are HUNDREDS of losses ahead of their nearest competition, the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves. They have been around 120 years, and have ONE World Series title. Even the Cubs, who haven't won anything in 99 years, have more World Series titles. More perspective: Imagine losing 100 games for 100 years. THAT'S what it takes to get to get to 10,000 losses. And, given the recent history of this team, I think it a fairly safe bet that the Phillies will be the first to 20,000 losses, too.

How bad is it in Philly? Sports Illustrated has done an article on the staggering number of losses, with a great selection of quotes from those involved: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/06/25/phillies0702/index.html.
