Professional Wrestling

I have stayed away from the story of Chris Benoit, the professional wrestler who took the lives of his wife and child before killing himself this past week. What I am NOT going to stay away is THIS story, which is that professional wrestlers for the most part live much, much shorter lives than the rest of us: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/jonathan_last/20070701_One_Last_Thing___Life_is_hard_-_and_often_short_.html.

As a kid, and even into my teens, I was a wrestling fan. I can't really say why, I just was. Still, I always wondered about these oversized people with their incredibly defined physiques. One wrestler in particular intrigued me. Rick Rude wasn't the most famous wrestler, but if you took a look at him, you realized that he did not have one single ounce of fat on him. It didn't look, well, NATURAL. As the Jonathan Last article points out, Rick Rude is now dead. Ditto Curt Hennig, the Junkyard Dog and now, Chris Benoit. I can't help but wonder how much the lifestyles, and more importantly, the muscle-enhancers these individuals consumed, have played in their all too short lives. I can't help but ask the question, since they no longer can, "Was it worth it?"
