Bush 43 = Bush 41?

Forget that comparison, because this Administration is now going much further in its efforts to distance the U.S. from Israel than the Bush 41 Administration ever did: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/123194.

So, Condoleeza Rice is now demanding that Israel end its "occupation" of the West Bank. How nice. I am sure that Dhimmi Olmert and the rest of the confederacy of dunces who make up the Israeli government won't have a problem with what she said, either. This is unbelievable.

I know that I have at least ONE reader in Israel, so through him I pass this question on to him: If you in Israel don't care enough about your country to turf this idiot out of power, why should we here in the U.S. care? And, for supporters of Israel here I ask: What can we do to prevent the Bush 43 Administration from sounding more and more like Europe in terms of its rhetoric on Israel?

Geek, that is a great question. The simple answer is, if we don't care, the US shouldn't care.

The complex answer is, we do care, but can't seem to do anything about it.

Olmert's approval rating is currently hovering between 0 and 3%; about 6 weeks ago, 100,000 people (in a country with only 3 million voters!) met in a multi-partisan rally in Tel Aviv, demanding that Olmert resign; various Knesset members have been making similar calls.

Sadly, that's all we can do, at the moment. As long as Olmert can rally 61 Knesset votes, he can beat any no-confidence motion; as long as he can keep at least 61 gov't coalition MKs to keep discipline, he can avoid a special election. Since there will be a drastic turnover of Knesset members at the next election (Kadima and Labor will both lost lots of seats; Likud, Israel Beiteinu, and Shas will likely gain), the current Kadima/Labor members have a vested interest in avoiding elections. And because our voting system is indirect, we can't just petition to turn 'em out.

It's a serious problem right now, with no easy answer.

To me that is the ultimate question. I have limited influence on the Israeli gov't, but the USA is a different story.

It is important to keep the US gov't informed and aware of our positions on these matters. If we do not apply pressure we will not see any sort of change.
