Commando Basset Hounds

This one may set a new "high" in terms of Commando Basset behaviour. Sadie, the smallest of our three bassets, likes to dig. Hence, we have a lot of holes in our backyard, where the commando bassets roam free several times a day. Well, Sadie was digging yet another hole yesterday, and this apparently intrigued Phoebe, who is easily mystified by Sadie's (and everyone else's) activities.

The problems began when Phoebe chose to observe Sadie from right behind Sadie. This meant, of course, that everytime Sadie dug, she would spray dirt in Phoebe's face. This would upset Phoebe, who would proceed to howl at Sadie, which affected Sadie not at all, focussed as she was on her goal of excavating our entire backyard.

Eventually, Phoebe headed over to where Flash was and howled at him, apparently seeking a friendly ear. Flash, using all of his nonexistent mental acuity, must have decided that the situation merited investigation, and he slowly shuffled over to where the digging was going on, being delayed only slightly when he tripped over one of the other holes Sadie had created. Eventually though, he got there, and true to form, he too positioned himself directly behind Sadie, who promptly began to shower him with dirt as well. This upset Flash, who howled at Sadie. Not one to take any guff, Sadie howled right back at him, and Phoebe then added to the cacophony by howling at both other dogs. I couldn't help but think that I was witnessing the canine equivalent of a Pauly Shore or Carrot Top movie (only more intelligent).

At this point, and in an effort to avoid a "Disturbing the Peace" charge, I intervened by bribing the dogs to come into the house with the promise of a dog biscuit. Of course, I have been left with holes in the backyard large enough to swallow a Ford Excursion, but that is a small price to pay for the privilege of owning the three dumbest dogs in the world...................
