Afghanistan

Disappointingly, there is a movement afoot in my homeland of Canada to set a "deadline" for the withdrawal of all Canadian troops from Afghanistan: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/04/24/liberal-motion.html. The problem, the way I see it, is that many Canadians simply don't see terrorism as being a problem for them. Some of this belief can be ascribed to nothing more than simple naivete. However, there is also an element of anti-Americanism at work here, too. Some Canadians--and I am NOT saying that this is a majority or even a large minority of people--view terrorism as being an American problem, and since it is the actions of the U.S. which have caused terrorism, why should Canadian blood be spilled in Afghanistan? Of course, this is foolish, but that persistent streak of anti-Americanism must not be discounted in analyzing situations like this.

UPDATE (April 25, 11:11 a.m.): The resolution has been defeated, thankfully: http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070425/D8ONBCB80.html. Are we in the West really that lacking in resolve????
