There aren't many people in Baseball who I dislike more than Buddy "Bud" Selig, who in my mind has ruined the sport by turning a willfully blind eye to performance-enhancing drug use by players, and who conspired with the loathesome Jeffrey Loria to drive the final nails into the coffin of Baseball in Montreal. Well, it turns out that Buddy Bud has done very well for himself as the Commissioner of Baseball. How well? How about $14.5 million worth of well. See http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/04/03/bc.bbo.selig.pay.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories.
Under his watch, proud franchises like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals have been turned into laughingstocks because they simply cannot compete financially with the "big boys" like the New York Yankees and yes, the Boston Red Sox. There is no sense of competitive balance whatosever. Does having a high payroll guarantee you a World Series title? No, but it's pretty much a guarantee that you will make the post-season. Occasionally, some low-revenue team will sneak in, but that team is generally a flash in the pan. All of this is Buddy Bud's fault, and it is beyond frustrating that no one else can see this.............
