Girls Gone Wild

Interesting Op-Ed in today's Wall Street Journal on the "Girls Gone Wild" phenomenon: http://www.opinionjournal.com/taste/?id=110010027. I have often wondered about these DVD's--specifically, who buys them. I am not a great sleeper, and often wake up in the middle of the night, usually worrying about work-related crap. So, I will turn on the tv, and if you are flipping channels between, say, 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., you CAN'T escape the "Girls Gone Wild" infomercials.

As a guy, of COURSE part of me is thrilled at what I am seeing; what guy doesn't want to see scantily-clad, attractive young women? However, as a parent, I can't help but wonder what the parents of these girls must think when they see or find out that their daughters have "appeared" in one of the DVD's. I certainly know how I would feel (horrified, embarrassed, etc.). I also wonder how the girls themselves feel. I suppose that many don't have a problem with it, given the way celebrity has become a societal end in and of itself, but I have to think that a fair number are not too happy with themselves after the DVD comes out.

I guess that it's just kind of a sad commentary on our society that there is a market for "Girls Gone Wild".

The piece recommends raising the minimum age for participating in porn to 21. I don't think this goes far enough and so I have recommended one slight change to the proposal.
