A colleague of mine, Paul L., and I have frequently discussed the treatment of soldiers returning home from both Afghanistan and Iraq, and as a companion issue, how the public has reacted both to the wars and the soldiers. Here is an article on that same subject: http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_5815671?nclick_check=1, along with my colleague's comments as he introduced the article:
At last!! The below article is what I have been saying for a long time now, and I am glad that it is coming from an Iraq veteran. What he observes stands as the greatest failure of this president-- and it is a failure which may cost us this war. For whatever reason (because he has no faith in the American people, because he thought it politically "unwise," or because he has elitist contempt for us), this president never asked the American people to make any sacrifice to defeat our enemies or hasten victory. He has asked for nothing, and we gave nothing. The people do not have an investment in this war-- material, emotional or otherwise, and that is why the far Left can cravenly declare defeat or cheer defeat without repercussion. Funny that he uses "American Idol" as an example of how detached and indifferent we are-- I recently said that if the president declared that "American Idol" had to be cancelled due to the war, more people would be outraged than if we actually lost the war. This article is right on the money. This president is indeed an embarassment.
