Why?

I read stories like this and I really wonder if humanity is, as it claims to be, an "evolved" species: http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/2007-12/gorilla-massacre/gorilla-massacre-video.html?fs=www.nationalgeographic.com.

What would possess people to do things like this? Then again, given what we do to each other, why in the world would I be shocked because we are incedibly cruel and murderous towards animals? I guess that I'm just naive...................

It's pretty hard to understand why anyone would do this. The gorillas weren't threatening anyone and they were not killed for food. There's an interesting blog belonging to the wildlife rangers at Virunga National Park, where the massacre happened. The rangers have been forced out of the park by rebel militia who have taken over the gorilla habitat sector of the park. The rangers are trying to get back in to see what's been happening to the gorilla families they had been protecting. One of the rangers took a video of two baby gorillas who were orphaned by the attack, and are now being cared for by humans:

How do people bring themselves to such cruelty? It is sick and barbaric.
