Imposing silence

Ever since the publishing of the Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, there has been a leeriness on the part of publishers to put out any books at all which A) criticize Islaml; B) satirize Islam; C) question Islam, etc., etc.: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121797979078815073.html?mod=opinion_main_commentaries. This climate of fear is not just caused by a belief that Muslims around the world will riot if they are "offended", though that is certainly a part of it. It is also caused by so-called "scholars" here in the West who go out of their way to kowtow to Islamic "sentiments".

In a world where supposedly scholarly works are published accusing (some) Jews in the United States of dual loyalty, why is Islam off-limits?
