The new and improved Cold War

The Russians are going to start using Syrian ports as permanent bases: http://www.ynetnews.com/Ext/Comp/ArticleLayout/CdaArticlePrintPreview/1,2506,L-3434145,00.html.

Given the vastly increased Russian belligerence towards the West in general and the United States in particular, does anyone else want to bet that they won't get actively involved once the Iranian/Syrian/Hezbollah three-headed monster moves against Israel again?

I am pretty sure that Syrians will be on the winning end of the Russian base-use deal.

When I saw this, I looked up information about the Syrian Navy, and saw that it is all old Soviet-era ships.

So this just seems logical. If Russia wants bases in the Mediterranean, they'll want to use bases that can service Russian ships without much fuss, right?

Logical, even though it is not good for anyone.
